@Lockpro There are good reasons for wanting to be anonymous online, though:

      @stefan @Lockpro

what anonymity do you have when creating a website? you have the same ability to post hate and misinfo that way. the only difference with decentralized social media is the boost. it's just a faster and easier way to spread that stuff than email or linking to it in your blog.

the problem is the bad shit plus the corporate algorithm. that it quickly figures out what vile stuff is triggering people and is able to push it out to millions and the profit incentive demands it.

@stefan Strange. Why wouldn't they choose ActivityPub instead?

@GrahamDowns @stefan They do have their own servers here already, might be diversifying (and yeah, the intrusive verification).

@GrahamDowns @stefan ...haha yeeeah after reading it, it's the centralisation that seems to be the draw for creating it that way.

I wouldn't take this seriously yet.

No, I stopped following these non-real standard projects. I do also doubt some actors.
I am very disappointed - there are more and more such projects where volunteers are involved …

@sl007 I agree. To me, ATproto/atmosphere will always be an attempt to coopt a successful grassroots movement that aims to take control of our social media away from tech companies. And they seem to be quite successful.

Still, seeing efforts like Blacksky and Northsky does give me hope that the control can be maybe wrestled back.

@jcrabapple Blacksky recently managed to create their own appview, which was the last missing piece for full independence from Bluesky, from what I understand.

@jcrabapple Yeah, I don't know how this is all going to look long-term, given how expensive it supposedly is to run the full infrastructure.

Blacksky has raised some money, but they currently have fewer users on their PDS than the Forkiverse server.

Northsky has much less than that.

@stefan If you read carefully, the article provides hints on why they do want to create another one:

„The initiative to create the social media platform W is supported by an advisory board and former ministers and business representatives, primarily from Sweden.“

In other words: There‘s no big money to be made w/ Mastodon and there’s no place for „former ministers“ and others to use it to look „important“ in any way either.

Considering how popular the fediverse already is with at least some of the public institutions in Europe, this is a puzzling move.

"European organizations are about to launch their own social media platform, W, amid rising tensions with the United States."

Love the reverse alphabetical naming convention and how it implies that they're planning to make as many as 22 more of these after this one.
