I keep on having a strange feeling that the Fediverse could be better.

Not just that it could be used more effectively, as yes it really could be by people. But more a factor that apps, the ability to post from one true account could be a thing.

It's been sorta proven in a way with developers building on AT Protocol with the invention of Flashes & Bluescreen for Bluesky.

Why can't we have 'one account to rule them all?' Is that even a 'good' idea?

What kinds of apps? Could you provide an example?

@silverpill There's Bluesky and there set of apps, you can use one login for Bluesky, Bluescreen & Flashed.

When it comes to the Fediverse you can't login to Pixelfed or Lemmy with your Mastodon account.

@sam But you can interact with Pixelfed and Lemmy users from a single Mastodon account. You can also choose from many different Mastodon apps.

          What's unique about ATProto ecosystem?

@sam@break3.social you're right, that would definitely be preferable!

Like being able to log in to Mastodon from a Peertube account, or browse Lemmy while logged in from NodeBB.

I'd love to work on this in 2026! Realizing it would require lots of interop work between software though. Such is the nature of decentralized, parallel development.

@julian If you or any one else creates something like this I'd love to join whatever instance is for beta testing as it would be amazing to help test it out.

@silverpill @sam but the interaction is not the same. For example PixelFed users can post something like 8 images at a time, but Mastodon only ever shows you the first 4. There is no way to see the other 4 images, unless you have a PixelFed account. Same is true for Lemmy and other platforms, there are certain parts of the experience that you just can't participate in via Mastodon.

@fancysandwiches @sam These are Mastodon's limitations. For example, my server can display more images than Mastodon and it also can process stuff Lemmy sends.

So I am wondering whether the ability to login to other servers is actually needed or we can achieve the same outcome by making a server that is compatible with many kinds of clients (e.g. Mastodon clients, Pixelfed clients, Lemmy clients).

That would mean the server would need to support every API for each software. Not impossible but opens you up to breaking changes if the APIs change out from under you.

Also some people don't use apps, just a browser 😄 that's why logging in via other accounts has some appeal.

@silverpill @sam I think it's pretty unreasonable to ask that every developer of a Fedi project support every feature of every other product. At that point what would differentiate the projects?

@fancysandwiches @sam There is already a lot of overlap between different platforms. They are mostly differentiated by how default client looks.
