XMPP is a good protocol, you have several servers and clients.
For a forum, I very like Flarum. It's FOSS, working with php. Looks like Discourse, easy to manage and have many good plugins.
The community is great too.
If you want make a quick test you can install it with #Yunohost , same for Discourse.
