The #Fediverse just broke 2M MAUs!
2,162,745 MAUs, to be exact!
And keep in mind, this does not count data from servers that have opted out of indexing, which accounts for another 2M accounts (which may or may not be active)!

@fediversenewsDo I understand correctly that a third of all servers went down in a single month? Is that a normal situation because of people self-hosting and losing interest again? Or should we be alarmed?

Looking at the graph, it might be that it is inaccurate starting data combined with a slow decline

FediDB stopped crawling for a while to add support for robots.txt. The server drop-off is probably mostly because many are opting out of being crawled.

@fediversenewsI'd say this might be wrong. https://fediverse.observer/dailystats reports different numbers.

Might be some error with tracking GoToSocial. Yesterday it showed around 200k MAU, but now it's gone completely https://fedidb.org/software/gotosocial

I think GoToSocial was at the center of the whole robots.txt thing and they spoofed the numbers and then FediDB added support for it. Maybe some more talks happened after FediDB came back online.

@fediversenews@atomicpoet @fediversenews I am sure these are artificially inflated. The flurry of #Pixelfed signs ups over the last month count as MAU, but that will plummet as many will never come back, due to the nature of people

@fediversenewsThe numbers are down to 1.3M today, which matches Fediverse Observer. So it seems like this was pretty clearly some data problem on the side of Fedidb.
On the positive side, if Fediverse Observer has been consistently correct, the number of monthly active users has increased every month since October last year. So at least there's that.
