I’ve been thinking about community software most of my life.

23 years ago, I started organizing communities.

15 years ago, I joined the wave of "next-generation" forums that popularized community as an enterprise feature.

7 years ago, I began reflecting on everything I'd learned in a notebook.

3 years ago, I drafted a few core "beliefs".

6 months ago, I rewrote them to start getting feedback.

Yesterday, I published my 5 beliefs:

    five beliefs – burning web

I'm curious what you think about them. If you're interested in talking, reach out!

But, if you just want to know if I'm more excited about #ATProto or #ActivityPub... you've missed my point. 😅

No protocol can save us, because the challenge is not existing technology, it's unexamined assumptions. I want to dare to believe in something different.

@linc I think you will find the Piefed project interesting: https://join.piefed.social/ and yes very valid points.

linc@phpc.social oooh interesting...! And a little teaser at the end too

          > I don’t believe software exists today that follows all these beliefs, but I found an established community software project willing to try with me.

          > Fifteen years after I joined a couple of Canadian entrepreneurs to ride a wave of “next-generation” community software, I believe it’s time to take another big swing.

Who were these Canadian entrepreneurs? What's the next big swing? It sounds interesting!

            @linc

Those 5 principles are spooking me because I don’t think we’ve met but you’re narrating my own thoughts…
I’m at the beginning of a bumpy meander trying to pitch community-first social tech to urbanism and climate orgs. May I add your page to my reference heap?

kris@outmo.de Piefed and Lemmy are link aggregators, but a couple of those next-gen forums (notably, nodebb@fosstodon.org) have joined the fediverse.

Different strokes for different folks, but sometimes a good honest forum UX is the ideal path forward 🙂
