    @leanderlindahl@mastodon.social @jrollans@mastodon.social

    What kind of groups do you have in mind?

    Something like #Guppe groups? (Currently no longer active, afair).

    Or something with more features?

    @nick @leanderlindahl definitely something more well-rounded and feature full the old Guppe groups were little more than a bit user that would boost everything to everyone who subscribed. A Lemmy style community would make more sense, but that’s a whole different platform. I’d like to see groups that people could use like Facebook marketplace and things like that. I personally don’t use it, but most of my friends won’t leave Facebook mainly because of the marketplaces.

      @nick @jrollans isn't Guppe more or less the same as Fedigroups, like a mailing list? Groups would be a replacement for FB groups (morally objectional) and instead of Matrix rooms (too hard to onboard regular people). Or a like a private Slack channel..

        @jrollans @nick I assume Mastodon groups will require more complexity than microblogging, but it could be an optional add-on for "ambitious servers".

        The main feature/requirement that groups can discoverable and joinable via a regular mastodon account, because there's where it be a game changer.

        Otherwise people can just use Matrix, Mattermost, Signal, Olvid, Ginlo... But that removes the discoverability and " joinability".

          @leanderlindahl it really would’ve be fantastic! Thought I suppose in a way you could use something like Lemmy of PieFed to achieve these types of groups. Just create communities that are invite only and don’t federate outside of the group itself (unless you want it to), but that gets complicated when trying to explain to people that don’t use ActivityPub systems.

          @jrollans I've a couple of times suggested making Mastodon also have SSO properties, I.e. using your Mastodon account for authentication on services that integrate with that.

          Then you could set up all kinds of things like Lemmy in your example or Flohmarkt for "marketplace".

          I like the idea of having Mastodon as your "base" account, from which you can participate – Pixelfed, Loops, kBin, Flohmarkt (marketplace), Mobilizon (events). That would make it much easier to move people.

            @jrollans but lots of people seem to object to that idea. I can't see the negatives, it'd be a capability that could be used. Not a mandatory for everyone. You still be able register separate accounts everywhere if you don't like using one for many things.

              @leanderlindahl @nick it would definitely be way more useful if it was built in to Mastodon instead of some SSO with another platform. I’ll see if I can dig up that pull request that has the groups feature for Mastodon. It’s pretty much exactly what I would want from a feature like that.

                @leanderlindahl I don’t understand the negativity either! But there are a lot of other Fediverse issues people get pretty bent out of shape over that in don’t pretend to understand.

                      @jrollans
                      A few years back Zuckerberg learnt that Open Standards win. So he set about doing stuff using Open Standards and making Metas AI open.
                      That hasn't worked out so I am wondering of he is going col on the whole idea.

                        @MrLee I wouldn't be surprised to see Threads "announce" that they're dropping support for ActivityPub under the guise of some new feature that "can only work if they drop support". They've done it before.
